NDP Shifts into Gear in Charlottetown

New Democrats in the Charlottetown riding got their 2025 campaign off to a strong start Thursday evening (March 20). A packed room at the Murphy’s Community Centre cheered the nomination of Joe Byrne to contest the seat.
The evening kicked off with video-messages from national NDP leader Jagmeet Singh and Matthew Green, MP for Hamilton-Centre.
In their nominating speeches, Mikayla Gallant and Scott Alan highlighted Joe Byrne’s lengthy experience in community work and political activism, and his commitment to social justice. Byrne has a strong record, they said, in addressing issues of affordability, housing and health care, as well as work for community development, immigration and newcomers, youth, diversity, environment and sustainability. “If anyone walks the walk,” Gallant said, “it’s Joe Byrne.”
He is a previous leader of the NDP on PEI, contributor at the party’s national level, and an experienced campaigner.
In his acceptance speech, Byrne paid respectful tribute to opponents Sean Casey and Natalie Jameson for their service. He pledged his commitment to public housing, guaranteed basic income, extension of health coverage, support of workers, and cost-of-living actions. Stressing a campaign theme of gratitude and hope, he challenged Canadians to imagine a country that acts together on principles of generosity and common purpose.
